About
A pioneer graduate of psychology from Covenant University, Adebayo’s foray into the academic world is, in his perspective, an important part of his growing identity as a community organizer and social change agent. A clinical psychologist, his evolving interests include the exploration of indigenous forms of psychotherapy, the pluralisation of thought in clinical praxis and education, and the decolonization of mainstream discourse in psychology, development, and wellbeing. Adebayo’s research orientation is qualitative and narrative-based – a reflection of his evolving postmodern perspectives about the storied self, the ambiguity of identity and human interconnectedness. Adebayo prefers a qualitative approach to researching, and is now employing participatory action research modalities in his pursuit of a PhD degree. He cherishes dreams about helping establish alternative therapeutic paradigms and alternative learning platforms – as well as a generic curiosity about unorthodox methodologies. He would like to see an increasingly relevant academic community that is engaged with local realities.
Adebayo likes to describe himself as ‘an African with blood tainted by the neon lights of CNN – culturally lost between the linguistic co-morbidity of Received Pronunciation and Perceived Pronunciation'. One of Nigeria's new generation of ultra young academics, Adebayo has a strong postmodern bias and a stubborn restlessness with established spaces and orthodox myths. 'Bayo', energized by his values of human interconnectedness, the ambiguity of 'truth', the playfulness that makes 'life' participatory and relative, writes to voice out his imagination for pluralistic worlds where his doubts about faith and truth, his opinions about human interconnectedness and his narratives about the irreducible dignity of difference might some day be celebrated. Tired of the traditions that have come to define his operational contexts, Bayo sets to the streets of Nigeria to help change the conversation, break through the crippling disenfranchisement that his people are known for, and help weave new stories, new myths, new poems of people working together for better worlds. 'Bayo' is a active poet, singer, artist, and novelist. He is completing work on his second book.
